Possibly is the first of four books in APHRODITE that employ “hypertexts” (the other three: Renewed, Divine and This). The hypertextual figure of imitation here is Cervantes, whose comic masterpiece, Don Quijote, MM plans to trope by using it as a template for describing his journey through the Luso-Hispanic worlds of Miami (USA); Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Peru; Spain and Portugal. Despite its geographical and cultural retrospection Possibly, he says, “will be about the future, about the world of possibility.” Thus, like Vergil’s, MM’s epic will embrace past, present and future.
